Since there seem to be some pretty useful swords around early on doing better damage than daggers, Bloodlust springs to mind if you don't want to give it to a Samurai, giving your rogue a couple of swords seems like a good idea.
Is there any reason not to? One could be the lack of decent, or indeed any, swords usable in the off-hand, is this a problem?

Thieve's Daggers rock the party for the Rogue. Far as I know, there is a huge lack of off-hand swords, if your not a Samurai, and even then it is a pretty short list.

Hmmm, those Thieve's Daggers do look kind of tasty, ay what stage in the game can you get hold of them?

You can get one from Antone, for about 10000 gold, IIRC.

Ah, so they're not likely to featuer on my shopping list until the rogue's somewhat a higher level than the 8 in my most recent party Thanks for telling me where I'll be able to get my hands on one of these beasts later on.

My Misfit Rogue is level 8 and he just purchased (yes, purchased, not stole) a Thieve's dagger from Antone. So it is available, if he has it in stock, that is. (Was only there recently, so maybe you do have to be a certain level before it is available, not sure.) If he doesn't have it now, try checking after a few sleep periods when he has restocked a bit. IMO, this is the best way to go with a thief, weapon wise. But you might want to wait til he has a few points in throw skills, cause once he equips it, the only thing he can throw is bombs and stuff, and you do NOT want him fumblling those. (Take if from womeone who knows.) judee

AFAIK, there are no off-hand swords for rogues...even non magical ones.

Sorry, my meaning wasn't clear: I meant that if it costs 10000 gold then at level 8 I'm far more likely to be trying to buy books for my bishops than a high-level weapon for my rogue AFAIK, there are no off-hand swords for rogues...even non magical ones. Shame, that's what I feared from reading here and elsewhere. It's a bummer really that they chose to cripple Dual Wield by making equippable off-handers so damned rare

~~kragorn~~
have you considered having a gorgeous, named sword in your primary slot and a tasty thief's dagger in the offhand?
you can get some pretty nice combos, by NOT relying on just another sword in the offhand.

V***V Yeah, what she said. I never use that infamous cursed sword for my characters, but in the rare event that I pick up Myles that's what he gets stuck with (literally) and since he's already cursed he gets the Thieves Dagger (or a Poison Dagger) as a secondary weapon. Plus, unless I'm remembering incorrectly, he still backstabs with it so it adds to the berserk damage.

Yes Vesselle, it was discovering the 'B' sword and realsing I didn't want to give it to the Sam that made me think about it.
However I read somewhere that it's a very bad idea to dual-wield different weapon types unless you've pumped both weapon skills, something only a fighter is ever likely to be able to do sometime late into the game.

I dont believe rouges/lords have as much as a problem with this, as rouges have decent sences that fighters dont have.
when close combat and dual weapons go up it will be on sen/int this means that you can focus more on sword/dagger for your rouge. Also, if you are constanly attacking with both weapons, it wont matter if your skill is low early in the game. the more you miss the more the skill goes up through use (as you have to use it more to hit things)

I hear what you're saying but I'll need to do some experimenting, I'll try giving Bloodlust to the rogue in the party I'm about to retire, see how his damage output changes.

I give B to my Samurai, and he kills everything now. 4 attacks, 1 or 4 swings each (off hand / primary). B does 'tween 18 and 35ish a hit (and hits about 75% of the time), whilst off-hand does about 10 or so. Mine fighter has that upper Mon sword, and does mayhap half the damage. Hmm, sacrafice THAT much damage for 1-2 shots of ranged fire? LOL, heck no

Well if you put it like that I didn't realise that B made soooooo much difference; <sigh> if only the Sam's magic was as easy to build up as the Valk's then one you could end up with some reasonable spellcasting skills to use while the critters arrive (with my ranged-preferred party anyway). Of course, if the off-hand is only contributing 10 ... what about if I gave the sword to my Dracon rogue and left him using only a single weapon. Sure, he'd lose dual-wield but with x2 backstab he'd still be a lot better off than with his daggers ... hmmm, need to work out his likely damage when he'd get the Thieve's Dagger ... BTW are there two of those for him to dual-wield?
