Now I was wondering if anybody plays lords, and how do you train them. When reading a Spotlight created by somebody named Altus Seven on this (http://www.geocities.com/jandrall/) site (fine tips, btw) I was not feeling that this is the best way how to shape a lord into an considerable munchkin.
There's what I tried and if anybody has anything to add, please do.
Well, first of all, from "roleplaying" point of view the lord was making an impression of a renaissance cavalier from the very first moment. Being equipped by rapier and main gauche at the beginning and having specialisation in dual weapons, it was completelly different from common "paladin" type. Another interesting feature was, that you can hang almost anything you find on your lord. And that's also all you can do with him.
So that's I have builded my strategies on.
First of all, I decided what are the most important attributes to raise, and I chose to make it Speed and Senses.
Maybe that makes no sense at a first glance, but it worked. I explain why: as the lord has no special abilities to boost his hits, as for example fighter's berserking, or crit strikes of samurai or rogue's backstabbing, it's obvious that the only possibility is to give him weapons which will do the damage thanks to their special bonuses. And, fortunately for lord, he can use almost all of them
So the only thing he must - and he also can - do is to hit with the weapons fast and accurate. That's why Speed. As I gave my lord Fang/Stilleto for close combat, I wanted to have both the 10% probabilities of kill go as early as possible and as often as possible. Also, Speed gives a character more tries and thus helps to train skills more.
Senses I chose for different reason - ranged combat and Eagle eye trait.
For a ranged skill, I decided to have Modern weapons. Well, there are two reasons - the "renaissance gentleman" type just looks better with rifle for me, and the second reason is called Blunderbuss. With it's incredible damage and 5% kill ability it's one of the best ranged weapons and thus perfectly suited for lord.
The only drawback is, that you can't train Modern weapons easily from the begining, and you also can't buy enough ammo, until you join Umpani.
So in Monastery/early Arnika I had my lord use throwing weapons. He had something to do when enemy was out of range, trained Ranged combat skill which helps with any ranged weapons, and had a small bonus for later if there would be a necessity to use some dusts or throwing potions. But in any case I looked for Rattus as early as possible to have his Zip gun for training.
In Arnika I also gave my lord Diamond epee and Poignard (from Vi's shipwreck) and this gave him a good enough damaging power for close combat.
Surprisingly enough, this approach was really effective, as my lord has more kills now than my samurai (also trained in Speed and Senses) with his high Critical strike skill, following ranger with his ranged critical and fighter (who is armed with Mauler and Diamond eyes and goes last, finishing with his 100HP strikes all those who are already half dead).
Magic: I used him as healer and later as a supporting mage with my bishop, to spare bishop's spellpoints by casting protective spells like Armorplate and Magic screen instead of her. Even with Lightning, Whirlwind and Instant death spells he is not too efective combat mage, because those spells are rather effective (with the exception of Instant death of course, which affect only one enemy) if enemies are close and standing together, so there is not too much chances to use them effectivelly. But the weapon skills lord posses are good enough for combat, namely later, when you encounter more and more magic resistant monsters.
That's all folks and let me know if you have another ideas for lord. :-)
