Just got done with my toughest battle so far. Involving cultists, elementals, poppies, and a huge mob of highwaymen. I KNEW that a key to the battle would be taking out the cultists, ASAP. So besides tageting them with long-range magic, I target all my bows on one of the cultists. Ok, start combat. The highwaymen move in, and stoopid idiot archers re-target on them. I DIDN'T TELL YOU TO DO THAT! Cripes! The highwaymen are a minor annoyance, my fighters can hold them off for awhile, but those damn cultists gotta go NOW! Is there any way to force these bozos to stay on the target I tell them to go for? I mean. what's the point of being smarter than the AI if I can't use it?
ps. I survived, but had to burn through 5 (FIVE) ressurection powders, damn near every one of my offensive potions, had 4 party members under 10 hit points at battles end, and not enough magic left to power a lightbulb or change a bandage.
OTOH...22,500 ep's each, at 9th level, ain't shabby ;D

Wow! Level 9 - you go Merkin! I'm glad that there are no lightbulbs that need changing in the game for Merkin's benefit

~~merk~~ poop! exactly how are you targeting? when i do it, i don't have a problem. i assign spellcasters their spells first then i decide which weapon i want everyone else to use then i go back a 3rd time and click each face and click each thing i want them to attack. ~~making sure they say "ok boss" or "sure, whatever" then let 'em fly. i haven't had a problem yet, except where someone runs out of ammo and re-equipps, then they shoot at whoever they darn well please. V***V

Well, I've been targeting almost backwards from that. Change weapons if needed, assign targets, make sure they're in range, unblocked, etc, then assign spell targets. I can't see how that would make a difference, though, as we're doing essentially the same steps.
Maybe I never noticed this before because up till now it wasn't that critical that I take out the long-range enemies first.
ps...I'm stickin with this party, just you watch!

Yup. Auto-targeting sucks big time. The worst part is that you can't do anything about it and more or less waste a turn hitting something not dangerous while there's some big critter breathing down your neck. That said... Doing that battle at level 9 is either the bravest thing I ever heard or the most insane one. Either way I stand in awe! And... wait a minute... that means...you're past Trynton! *faints*

*tosses smelling salts at Runiel* *sigh* no, not quite. Done with Arnika, back to the monastary before Trynton. RE: brave/crazy...well, I didn't WANT to fight them. Forgot to mention that I was already a bit battered from a pair of Hogars, saw the mob coming, tried to hide in a crevasse...didn't work, they saw me. Would have had to re-load from leaving Arnika and do half the road over again, and said to myself "self...wtf?...might as well give it a shot", and battle was on. *Merkin walks away humming "Brave and Crazy" by Melissa Etheridge, felling somewhat pleased with himself.*

Mistah Poopah Siah,
Did you perhaps initiate a move command? If so, then 2 things:
1) the enemy will move into range, and you will auto-target them (can't do much about that)
2) when it is your turn to move, you can re-target all your peeps back to the whatever-nasty in the back.
if not then 2 things:
1) hopefully you shoot before they move, if not,
2) your estranged..nono..eschewed.no..um...shoot something like that, you get the pic.
...skitter skitter...

Beauty! Issuing a move command...and then NOT moving, was exactly the technique I needed. Long-range magic goes off as originally planned, and bows/guns can re-target badnastycultists. Thanks, Spydah! ;D

Np btw, the other good thing about pulling a non-move, is to spin in place so as to protect your peeps in the back after the puter just fit into that spot you were sure they couldn't.

OT: Thought on a possible section for your site, general combat strategies. The non-move move, strafing, leading the target with area spells, facing/positioning strategies, etc.

Not sure how qualified I am (except on early game strategies, can do the road blindfolded and asleep by now ), but I'll give it a go. probably post it here first to get feedback/suggestions.

to quote aria: "oopsie!! mah bad!" i'm assuming stuff. again. ::shakes her head:: i always slam my space bar at the start of each round. (remember bg2? its second nature now for me to do that) i mean, i might just want to start chasing that scaredy-cat bug thingie that thinks the BB are actually some kinda threat ... or even cuddle up close to those cute highwaymen, so's i can blacken their pretty brown eyes. it just didn't occur to me that i should say that. ::feels awful:: i thot we all did that. i'm sorry!! awww, poopyshoes! ok, me and the BB are gonna go stand in the corner, wearing our wizzie hats for a while now. (yeah, yeah. don't tell Aria that they're dunce caps, okay?) V***V

oookaaayyyy, now that we are WAAAYYYY OT.. or is that OT? Can never get those straight, at any rate (heh), Early-Game, Mid-Game and End-Game are all important, and each will have different strategies, especially depending on which patch you have (along with the PP thing), Melee, Ranged, or Magic slant, etc. No worries, LOTSA room fer strats on this thing.
Yak now, I keep seeing the same questions pop-up on every board I go to, and I have all the answers on my site that I keep locked up because (well, it's nekked for one) it is not finished. So I tells meself, "Self, so what?" "So what? So what!?!? I'll tell you..er..me...us? Shoot, where was I?"
erm...
Right, so, I'll prolly post here tomorrow/later today (gotta do a FEW things first) with the addy (besides, the BB have tapped right through the floor in places).

Uh... if you don't like autotargeting, why are you using it? You can turn it off, you know.
Under the General Options, on the second screen, there's a checkbox for "Autotarget Single Target Spells". It's on by default. (You may kick yourself now.)
I'm not sure if turning it off is a 100% solution to your problem, since I think it doesn't affect ranged weapons -- just spells. Or maybe it also does ranged weapons under certain conditions -- again, I'm not sure.
